ROK CJCS Gen. Won partakes in Tri-CHOD

Chairman of the Republic of Korea Joint Chiefs of Staff Gen. Won, In Choul had a trilateral meeting with Chairman of the U.S. Joint Chiefs of Staff Gen. Mark A. Milley and Chief of Staff, Japan Joint Staff Gen. Mark A. Milley and Chief of Staff, Japan Joint Staff Gen. Koji Yamajaki on the 29th of April(HST). Outgoing U.S. Indo-pacific Command commander adm. Philips. Davidson, incoming U.S. Indo-pacific Command commander adm. John C. Aquilino, and U.S. Forces Japan commander Lt. Gen. kevin B. Schneider also attended while U.S. Forces Krea commander Gen. Robert B. Abrams participated via video teleconference. This is the first in-person meeting between the senior-most U.S., ROK, and Japanese military officers since the onset of the global pandemic. The last trilateral discussion was held virtually in November 2020 due to COVID-19 restrictions. The three parties shared their concerns about North Korea's nuclear and ballistic missile programs and discussed the importance of promoting a rules-based international order in the region. Gen. Won underlined the importance of multilateral cooperation among the three countries to ensure peace and stability on the Korean Peninsula and Northeast Asia. Gen. Milley reaffirmed the ironclad commitment of the U.S. to defend both the ROK and Japan and that the U.S. remains prepared to provide extended deterrence guaranteed by the full spectrum of U.S. military capabilities. GEN Yamazaki emphasized the importance that Japan, U.S. and ROK work together for North Korea's full compliance in accordance with all relevant United Nation Security Council Resolutions. The senior military leaders agreed to continue working together to address mutual security issues and increase multilateral cooperation in order to enhance peace and stability in the region. After attending the Tri-CHOD, Gen. Won will attend the U.S. Indo-Pacific Command Change of Command ceremony and subsequently meet with the Commanders of U.S. Pacific Army Command, Pacific Air Forces Command, and Marine Forces Pacific Command to engage in high level dialogue focused on enhancing Alliance cooperation between the ROK and U.S. Gen. Won will be returning on the 3rd of may.

Won In choul departed from korea on the 28th of April to attend the ROK, U.S., and Japan Trilateral Chief of Defense(Tri-CHOD) meeting and the Change of Command ceremony for the Commander of the U.S. Indo-pacific Command in Hawaii. Gen. Won, In Choul will have the trilateral meeting with the Chairman of the U.S. Joint Chiefs of Staff Gen. Mark A. Milley and the Chairman of the Japan Joint Chiefs of Staff Gen. Koji Yamazaki, and have discussions about multilateral cooperation to promote peace and stability on the Korean Peninsula and Northeast Asia. During the visit, Gen. Won will meet with the Commanders of the U.S. Indo-pacific Command, U.S. Army Pacific Command, U.S. Pacific Airforce Command, and the U.S. Marine Forces Pacific Command, ec cetera, and have dialogues on strengthening the ROK-U.S. military cooperation and other major agendas.
General Won met with General Graziano

In the morning of April 7, Chairman of the ROK JCS, General Won In-choul met EU Military Committee Chairman General Claudio Graziano and discussed the security conditions of the Korean peninsula and the plan to reinforce ROK-EU military cooperation. General Graziano appreciated the warm welcome of the ROK JCS and suggested promoting the strategic partnership through consistent military cooperation between the ROK and the EU. General Won expressed his gratitude to General Graziano for his efforts of strengthening the relationship between the ROK and the EU, requesting EU's consistent cooperation and support toward the ROK Government's multi-aspect efforts to denuclearize and establish enduring peace on the Korean peninsula. In addition, General Won and General Graziano agreed to continuously work together to bolster military cooperation between the ROK and the EU. General Graziano's visit was conducted in pursuit of a high-level talk between the ROK and the EU and enhancing mutual cooperation.

General Won, In Choul, Chairman of the ROK joint chiefs of staff and General Mark Milley, the Chairman of the U.S. Joint Chiefs of Staff had a video call, and vowed to maintain adn develop the already robust combined defense posture based on the ironclad ROK-U.S. Alliance. General Won congratulated the new Biden administraction and Secretary Austin's inauguration, and stated that he expects the 70 years of ROK-U.S. Alliance to continue growing as a mutually complementary and future-oriented Alliance under the new leadership. General Milley stated that the ROK-U.S. Alliance is the linchpin of the peace and prosperity in the region and highlighted that he would continue to closely work together to make the Alliance even stronger. The two leaders shared their assessments on the current security environment on the Korean Peninsula and agreed to provide active military support for the diplomatic efforts of the two countries to establish complete denuclearization and permanent peace on the Korean Peninsula. The two leaders highly evaluated last year's preparation efforts for the wartime OPCON transition, despite impacts from COVID19, and agreed to continue the effort this year as well in order to make visible progress on wartime OPCON transition by expdeiting the condition fulfillment. The video call was conducted with the intention to strengthen the ROK-U.S. combined defense posture subsequent to the inauguration of the Biden administration and Secretary Austin.
Gen Won meets EU Ambassador to Korea

General Won, In choul, Chairman of the ROK Joint Chiefs of Staff hosted H.E. Maria Castillo Fernandez, EU Ambassador to ROK, in the JCS headquarters on the morning of January 27th. The two leaders discussed the security envirnoment on the Korean Peninsula as well as the direction for the ROK-EU military cooperation. Ambassador Castillo Fernandez expressed her desire to further the ROK-EU strategic partnership between through continued military cooperation. General Won extended his gratitude for the Ambassador's endeavors to enhance the ROK-EU relations and expressed commitment to continue to work towards strengthening the ROK-EU military cooperation. General Won also asked for EU's continued cooperation and support for the various initiatives of the ROK government pursuing a complete denuclearization and permanent peace on the Korean Peninsula.
