CJCS Gen Won In Choul hosts Farewell Ceremony for CFC Commander

On the morning of Tuesday June 29th , General Won In Choul, Chairman of the Republic of Korea Joint Chiefs of Staff held a farewell honor guard ceremony for General Robert B. Abrams, Commander, Combined Forces Command, who will be completing his tenure on July 2nd. Chairman Won remarked that “General Abrams poured his heart and soul into maintaining peace on the Korean Peninsula and furthering the ROK·US Alliance for the past 32 months, and showed tremendous leadership during the extremely difficult circumstances of COVID-19 to maintain the utmost ROK·US combined defense posture”. He also asked General Abrams to continue to be a firm supporter of the advancement of the ROK·US Alliance. Furthermore, he expressed his highest praise and extended his gratitude to the “28,500 men and women of USFK for their service and dedication away from home for the peace and stability on the Korean Peninsula.” General Abrams reciprocated the sentiments by emphasizing that his “time as a member of the ironclad ROK·US Alliance was a personal honor and privilege, and full of indelible memories.” He also remarked that he is “certain this alliance will emerge greater and stronger going forward” and that no matter where he is, he would “actively support and back the Alliance.” General Paul J. LaCamera, former Commanding General, USARPAC will succeed General Abrams as Commander, CFC on the 2nd of July.
CJCS Gen Won In Choul Office Call with Commander, USPACFLT

On Thursday June 10th, Chairman Won In Choul held an office call with Commander, USPACFLT Admiral Samuel Paparo to discuss the security situation on the Korean Peninsula and ways to advance mutual cooperation. Chairman Won congratulated Admiral Paparo on his new command and emphasized his intent to “further the cooperative relationship with the USPACFLT in order to support the ROK·US governments’ efforts to achieve complete denuclearization and permanent peace on the Korean Peninsula”. Admiral Paparo remarked that “the Republic of Korea is the US’ strongest ally, and that close cooperation is critical to maintain regional peace and stability”. He also promised to “maintain close communication to strengthen the alliance’s combined defense posture”. Admiral Paparo took command on the 5th of May and visited the Republic of Korea as a part of his broader effort to strengthen the relationship with key allies in the Indo-Pacific region.
Gen. Won meets with the Australian Ambassador

Gen. Won met with H.E. Ms Raper the Australian Ambassador to Korea on June 7, and discussed the security trend on the Korean Peninsula, as well as the direction for the enhancement of the ROK-AUS military cooperation. Ambassador Raper highlighted that she personally shares special ties with Korea as her grandfather fought in the Korean War, and agreed to further develop the friendship and cooperation between the two countries, marking the 60th anniversary of the establishment of the diplomatic relations between ROK and Australia. Gen. Won highlighted that Australia is Korea's true friend that shares a long-standing relationship, sending more than 17,000 troops to the Korean War, and agreed to continue endeavors to enhance the ROK-AUS defense and defense industrial cooperation. In addition, Gen Won expressed his gratitude for Ambassador Raper's proactive endeavors to enhance the ROK-AUS relations, and asked for her continuous cooperation and support for the Korean government's various efforts for the complete denuclearization and permanent peace settlement on the Korean Peninsula. The office call was intended as a meet and greet between Gen. Won and Ambassador Raper, who assumed office early this year, as well as to enhance mutual friendship.

Gen. Won met with Adm. John C. Aquilino in the morning of June 3, and discussed about the security trend on the Korean Peninsula and measures to enhance mutual cooperation. Adm. Aquilino reiterated that the ROK-U.S. Alliance is the linchpin of regional peace and prosperity and that he will continue to closely cooperate to develop a even more steadfast ROK-U.S. Alliance in a future-oriented manner. Gen. Won highlighted the importance of retaining a steadfast ROK-U.S. Alliance and robust combined defense posture. Gen. Won and Adm. Aquilino agreed to provide military support to the diplomatic efforts of the two governments for complete denuclearization and the settlement of permanent peace on the Korean Peninsula. Adm. Aquilino’s visit to Korea was made with the intention to strengthen the ties with major allies in the Indo-Pacific region through his first international trip after his inauguration on the 30th of April.

Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, Gen. Won, In Choul met today with the Chairman of the U.S. Joint Chiefs of Staff Gen. Mark A. Milley. The two military leaders exchanged views on the current security situation and reaffirmed the strength of the U.S.-ROK Alliance. They discussed the Unitedf States' unwavering commitment to the Republic of Korea and its continued commitment to providing extended deterrence. Gen. Milley and Gen. Won reiterated their commitment to security and stability in the region. The Chairmen welcomed further regional cooperation with partners and committed to maintaining the Combined Forces' "Fight Tonight" readiness. The long standing alliance between the United States and the Republic of Korea remains the lynchpin of security and stability on the Korean peninsula and the region. The bilateral talk was held with the intention to strengthen communication between the ROK and U.S. Chairman, as thet visited Hawaii to attend the U.S. Indo-Pacific Command Change of Command ceremony and the Tri-CHOD, as well as to make the combined defense posture even more robust.
