○ On Wednesday May 10th, Chairman Kim Seung Kyum hosted an office call with Marine Corps General David H. Berger, Commandant of the U.S. Marine Corps, during his visit to the Republic of Korea to share their assessments of the security situation on the Korean peninsula, including DPRK's nuclear and missile threat, and discuss ways to strengthen ROK-U.S. military coordination and mutual cooperation. ○ Chairman Kim thanked General Berger, who has spared no effort in establishing the combined defense posture and supporting the ROK Marine Corps*, for his visit, and emphasized that "maintaining a robust ROK-U.S. alliance and combined defense posture remains crucial in order to support militarily the agreed upon initiatives in the 'Washington Declaration' entailing a commitment to the enhanced extended deterrence." * As U.S. Marine Corps Commandant, General Berger played an active, vital role in △ signing of MOU stipulating various USMC training and education programs for the ROK Marine Corps, including the ROK-U.S. Marine Corps aviation mentorship program (signed Dec. 2021) △ resumption of large-scale amphibious landing drill, Ssangyong Exercise, which was discontinued in 2018 △ deployment of U.S. Marine Corps strategic assets, and more. ○ General Berger responded, "as the Republic of Korea is the U.S.'s strongest ally, I agree that close mutual coordination is crucial for peace and stability in the region." ○ Chairman Kim Seung Kyum hosted Air Force General Onno Eichelsheim, the Netherlands Chief of Defence during his first ever visit to the Republic of Korea and the ROK JCS to discuss the security landscape in Europe and the Indo-Pacific, including the Korean peninsula, and ways to strengthen military cooperation between Korea and the Netherlands. ○ Chairman Kim and CHOD Eichelsheim concurred that "the series of military provocations by DPRK are clear violations of UN Security Council resolutions, and pose grave threats to not only the Korean peninsula but the international society's security environment at large." Chairman Kim asked CHOD Eichelsheim for the Netherlands's participation in and support of the international society's efforts for DPRK's complete denuclearization, including sanctions against DPRK. ○ Chairman Kim and CHOD Eichelsheim voiced their concerns over the continuation of war in Ukraine, and agreed that Korea and the Netherlands, along with the international society, should support the establishment of peace and stability in Ukraine and Europe. Paparo during his visit to Korea for an office call and assessed the security situation in the region including DPRK's nuclear and missile threat, and discussed measures to strengthen ROK-US coordination and mutual cooperation. ○ Chairman Kim thanked Admiral Paparo for the USPACFLT commander's 4th visit to Korea during his tenure, and emphasized his intent to “further develop cooperative relations in order to support militarily efforts spearheaded by the ROK and US governments for DPRK's complete denuclearization and stability in the Korean peninsula." ○ Admiral Paparo responded "the Republic of Korea is the US's strongest ally, and close cooperation is critical to maintain regional peace and stability."
